AMP had been progressively upgrading the iconic Pacific FairShopping Centre after taking over full ownership and had come up against adifficult problem that had been created by years of alterations.  The previous handrails had had a step addedagainst them, which brought the clear height under the code requirements.  The problem was how to address this inkeeping with the new look balustrading that had been added elsewhere around theCentre.

AMP turned to Donnan for its Design expertise.  Multiple combinations of hand railing andfixings were considered in a design and development period that spanned almosttwelve months.  Donnan worked hard toensure final design was consistent with the other balustrading, but had tocircumvent damaging other finishes present. 

A cantilever balustrade was use, originating well under thelip of the opening so as not to affect previous Terazzo tiling installed overtwenty years ago and no irreplaceable. The original design was strengthened considerably to cater for theadditional 600mm of cantilever required, complicated by the stringent requirementfor panic loading.
